This independent advisory body has been supporting the Volkswagen Group since 2016 in assessing and further developing key future-oriented and sustainability issues. In 2024, it was renewed as scheduled to continue supporting the Volkswagen Group in implementing its sustainability strategy, incorporating insights from business and academia, and maintaining dialogue with stakeholders.
The Sustainability Council combines external and internal expertise while pursuing a holistic approach. Its input helps to consistently develop the Volkswagen Group as a mobility provider that benefits nature and society and to assume responsibility along the entire value chain across generations.
The Sustainability Council is organized into four so-called Sustainability Practice Groups comprising a total of twelve independent external experts from academia, civil society, and the business sector. Each group focuses on one of the four strategic sustainability dimensions: Nature, Our Workforce, Society, and Business. In each group, three external experts work directly with three internal Volkswagen Group employees—on an equal footing and with the clear goal of generating concrete ideas. In this collaboration, the advisory body contributes its broad external and international perspective.
Through regular exchanges among the Practice Groups, the topics of the regenerate+ sustainability strategy are actively advanced. The Sustainability Council contributes its expertise to both operational activities and the Group’s strategic development: for example, through on-site visits to production facilities, discussions and expert presentations in relevant Group departments, as well as by acting as a sounding board and sparring partner to the Board of Management. In this way, its input becomes effective at all levels of the company, making the Sustainability Council’s engagement visible throughout the Group.
